Poker Tips |
|
|
| 1. Choosing a Poker
Table |
|
Choose a poker table that matches your abilities
and experience. If you feel that the other people
at your table are more accomplished players than
you, it is time to move to another table.
Playing with skilled players is an excellent
way to improve your game but make sure it’s for
fun. Playing against better player’s for real
means that you’re just throwing money into a pot
that you stand little chance of winning.
Be realistic about your abilities. If you’re
new to poker, don’t play at a table full of professionals.
|
| 2. Bankroll |
|
Make sure you can afford to play at the table
you’re sitting at. If you don’t have a big enough
bankroll, you can’t play good poker and you’ll
be at a real disadvantage. There is nothing more
frustrating than being dealt a great hand that
you can’t afford to play.
If you frequently find yourself in this position,
move to another table that is better suited to
your bankroll. Never be afraid to leave a table.
Finally, remember the golden rule of gambling:
NEVER WAGER MORE MONEY THAN YOU CAN AFFORD TO
LOSE.
|
| 3. Alcohol |
|
Don’t play under the influence of alcohol.
Drunken poker players are easily separated from
their chips. When you’re drunk, you make mistakes
and play badly as a result of irrational decisions
which often lead to big losses.
Keep a clear head and you’ll enjoy your poker
all the more.
|
| 4. Observe Other
Players |
|
Good poker is all about studying human behavior.
Pay close attention to the other players around
your table. Try to pick up on their behaviors
that you can use to your advantage. Players may
act in different ways or say different things
when they have a strong hand sitting in front
of them.
Playing poker online prevents you from looking
other players in the eyes but the chat around
the table can give a lot away. Make sure you read
it, even if you’re not involved in the conversation.
Changes in game trends, such as the amount a player
wagers, can also be a good insight into the cards
they are holding.

| 5. Winning... Keep
Your Cool |
|
There is nothing more satisfying than scooping
a big pot but let big wins change the way you
play your poker. Many poker players have had a
big stack reduced to zero by playing stupidly
after they’ve scooped a big pot.
As soon as they’ve collected their pot, a smart
player will forget about it and go on playing
as they would normally.
|
| 6. Don't Chase
Your Losses |
|
In poker, as with all games, you'll win some
and you'll lose some. It's just part of the game.
If you lose a big pot, then so be it. Never be
tempted to chase your losses. Placing larger bets
and chasing your losses will ultimately lead to
bigger losses.
As long as your strategy is good, you stand a
good chance of recouping your losses in the long
run.
|
| 7. Control Your
Emotions |
|
The best poker players are often those who
can best control their emotions, Hence the term
'poker face'. Never let other players get an insight
into the way you're feeling... unless of course
you want them to.
Openly displaying happiness when you've just
been dealt a great hand will lead to the other
players folding early and reduce the amount that
you could potentially win.
Conversely, getting angry or upset at the poker
table will reduce reduce your enjoyment of the
game and make you play badly. The other players
will love this but don't give them the satisfaction.
Don't be afraid to leave the table to cool rather
than losing your money and and giving yourself
more reason to get upset.
|
| 8. Develop Your
Game |
|
if you wish to improve your game, make sure
that you go out of your way to learn more. Learn
from your failures and also from your successes.
There's a lot of poker information, advice on
strategy, hints and tips, etc, both on the internet
and in books. Read as much as you can and take
advice when it's offered but make sure it's relevant
to your game.
Be open minded and don't be afraid to try new
things. But if things don't go to plan, don't
be afraid to revert to your old game. When playing
online, take notes of the things that went well
and those things that didn't.
Playing poker with more skill is a great way
to raise your game. By watching their game you
have the opportunity to learn from them. However,
if you're going to play with better players, make
sure it's for fun or else you could end up paying
for the poker lesson!
|
| 9. Play Your Own
Game |
|
Different players have different styles, ranging
from those who enjoy an aggressive game to those
who prefer a 'softly softly' approach. Play the
game that your comfortable with and don't get
drawn in by the game of other players. If you
do, they'll end up dictating the game giving them
a considerable advantage.
|
| 10. Mix It Up |
|
As we said earlier, good poker is all about
studying human behavior. Just as you'll be watching
other players, they'll be watching you. They'll
be trying to pick up on your behaviors to give
them the advantage.
Don't let your game be predictable. Flex your
playing style over the course of the game so that
others at the table can't predict how you'll react
in a particular situation. Don't completely abandon
your style but mix it up, it will make you a difficult
player to play against.
